Hear ye, hear ye! Today we welcome one of the great queen of the YA lit internets to the Penguin Teen Author Spotlight stage! Beth Revis is not only the amazingly talented author of the Across the Universe trilogy (Shades of Earth! Ah!), but also can frequently be found hosting giveaways, contests, and interviewing other authors on her blog, or talking books and general awesomeness on her twitter. We heart her so much, and we can’t wait for you all to have the chance to read a little more about her! So without further ado, here’s Beth!
Name: Beth Revis
Novel: Shades of Earth
Available: January 15, 2013 (out now!)
Who’s your favorite author, living or dead? CS Lewis, author of the Chronicles of Narnia. I read the books when I was very young, and they were the first time I ever realized that there was more to the story than what was written. I actually did a video on this that you can find here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zKJkLBMpmNg
What’s your favorite thing about your book? My favorite thing about my first book, Across the Universe, was the page that has only one sentence on it. My favorite part about the second book of the trilogy, A Million Suns, is the page with only one word on it. My favorite part of the third and final book, Shades of Earth, is the blank page.
If you could spend one year on a deserted island with one character from literature, who would you choose? Either Katniss, who can help me survive, or Harry Potter, who can get me off the island. Or, if we’re talking about having fun on the island for that year, I think I might have to jump out of books and into movies and pull over Captain Mal J
Where do you write? I tend to write either on my couch (with my big black Lab named Sirius sitting beside me) or at the desk my husband made for me.(See above!)
Who is your favorite hero or heroine of history? While I don’t agree with all of his ideas, I find Martin Luther fascinating. The way he broke from the Church and started the Protest Reformation in a world where the idea of souls and eternal damnation was vividly present and universally believed in is amazing to me.
Do you tweet? What’s the funniest thing you’ve ever tweeted? I do tweet! You can find me at @bethrevis
Funniest tweet…probably a conversation between me and my friend @laurendestefano! I also live-tweeted the Royal Wedding and sometimes live-tweet Doctor Who episodes.
I have to say the best thing anyone else has ever tweeted at me was this description of me by reader @JazminLabrada: “Beth writes and christens her novels with the tears of her readers. Strangely, I’m OK with this.”
What is your favorite season? Fall—I love sweater weather, and my birthday’s in October!
If you could teleport anywhere in the known universe right now, where would you go? On Earth, I would go to the Australian coral reefs, or perhaps Kyoto during the cherry blossom season, or maybe the pyramids of Giza. But if you’re going to give me a space suit, take me anywhere I can see the stars.
Do you have any writing rituals? I don’t know if this counts as a ritual, but I usually write on my computer. However, if I get really, really stuck, I use a legal notepad (must be a legal notepad, preferably with white paper).
What is your idea of earthly happiness? Snuggling on the couch with my dog and husband, watching a marathon of Firefly episodes (or, perhaps, Doctor Who).
What is the best concert you’ve ever been to? When I was in college, I was a HARDCORE Barenaked Ladies fan. They came to my city, and I went with my best friend and his boyfriend. It was the first big concert I’d ever been to, and it was BRILLIANT.
What are you currently working on? I’ve got my fingers in a lot of pots right now—a short story, a novella, and a proposal for more novels!
…………………
